Young Bell Ringer Demonstrates Spirit of Giving

When the 3rd grade teachers at Saint Albert Primary challenged their students to get involved with "Stewardship in the Classroom," Jake Snipes decided his service project would be ringing bells for the Salvation Army. He stood outside Walgreens on 28th and Broadway and rang bells for two hours, collecting $167.25.

Jake didn't care that the temperature was in the 20s, he "just wanted to get poor people money for food and shelter, so they could have Christmas and a hot dinner." Click on the link below to read more about Jake's experience in a story from the Daily Nonpareil.

SA Students Play Santa for Those in Need

The 8th and 9th grade classes from Saint Albert Catholic Schools did some Christmas shopping Thursday morning, but the gifts weren't for themselves or their families - they were for the less fortunate in the Council Bluffs community.

The shopping was the culmination of two Christmas giving programs, which are an annual holiday tradition at the school. Each year the 7th and 8th grade students compete to see which class can collect the most money. The high school collection also is a class competition. The winning classes from each collection get the opportunity to do the shopping.

This year, $3,740.39 was collected from the Jr. High students and $2,918.08 was collected from the high school students, for a grand total of $6,658.47. This year's total was the highest in the program's history.

"Providing service to others and giving back to the community are important parts of the learning environment at Saint Albert. These collections have been a terrific team-building exercise for the students," said Brenda Moran, campus minister. "The students who do the shopping put a lot of thought and care into their purchases. It's a great reminder of what the Christmas season is all about."
